Shorter breaks like these are not unprecedented. This gives students two three-day weekends and splits the semester into chunks no longer than eight weeks long. According to Moreno, students spoke about increased anxiety and depression in the fall semester and even “suicide attempts that had been made.”Īfter meeting with students, Washburn administrators added two “wellness days” to the calendar, one on February 26 and the other on April 2.
Many students also spoke at the meeting to share their personal experiences. “We want this because we are actually struggling and just need mental health days.” Moreno organized the petition to give voice to students who couldn’t attend the meeting with administrators. “I know thinks that we just want to go party or something but it’s not true,” Brandon Moreno, WSGA’s diversity and inclusion director, said. The petition, signed by 1,114 students within a week, included comments from students who shared that they were making themselves “physically sick,” needed break days to combat exhaustion, and were concerned about their finances without the time off. At Washburn, students on the WSGA organized a petition and a meeting with the school’s academic committee to attempt to add mental health days to the spring 2021 calendar.
